Understanding the Freedom of a Green Card

When a person applies for an immigration visa, they do so intending to live in the United States, rather than individuals who seek non-immigrant visas, which allow the holder to stay in the country for a specified amount of time and for a specific purpose. A green card is another name for an immigration visa, and legally recognizes the holder as a permanent resident of the United States. Green cards can be obtained through a number of means, which include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Family members of a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident may apply for a green card. The law specifies certain eligibility requirements that must be met in order to receive a family visa.
  • A green card may be granted in the form of an employment visa to a foreign national who has been hired to work in the United States. Both the employer and the employee have to complete the application process.
  • A green card may be granted to an immigrant who seeks asylum in the United States. If their asylum petition is approved, they will be given permanent resident status.

Green cards must be renewed after ten years. During that time, the immigrant may decide that they would like to become a United States citizen. If they choose to pursue citizenship, they will need to apply for and complete the naturalization process.
