For those undocumented immigrants who avoid flying for fear of detection by the TSA, a new threat from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE has stepped up their periodic checks of passengers on trains and buses. This means that anyone traveling on Amtrak or Greyhound, for example, face the prospect of a uniformed and/or non-uniformed law enforcement officer asking them for their “papers”. If they cannot prove that they are here legally in the United States, a person faces detention until proven legal. Obviously, law enforcement is engaged in racial and ethnic profiling.
Many are detained, kept from their families, and deported thus leaving loved ones who rely both financially and emotionally on them to suffer. Families hoping and praying for comprehensive immigration reform continue to live in fear of being separated. Our Government should be steadfast in a commitment to pass immigration reform legislation and fix this nation’s broken immigration system. Only then can we, once again, be the beacon of freedom and hope for the world.
